 on\, the AFA (American Festival for the Arts) Big Band Concert\, featuring
  the AFA Big Band.\nStudents and faculty will perform a wide range of clas
 sics and modern jazz band repertoire in the shadow of Houston's downtown s
 kyline. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and relax (or dance!) at this exci
 ting performance. Generously underwritten by the Neiman Marcus Group.\nAme
 rican Festival for the Arts (AFA) was founded in 1993 by Houston composer 
 J. Todd Frazier to provide accessible\, high-quality music education and p
 erformance opportunities for youth and to broaden the audience for both ne
 w American works and the standard classical music repertory.\nTo achieve i
 ts mission\, AFA presents an annual Summer Music Conservatory and Concert 
 Series. This unique and acclaimed community-based music education program\
 , featuring faculty members drawn from the nations' finest educators\, per
 formers\, composers and conductors\, has become recognized as an important
  annual event in the cultural life of Southeast Texas and as a model for s
 imilar programs around the nation. A rigorous curriculum that includes lar
 ge and small ensemble performance\, music theory/enrichment classes and pr
 ivate lessons forms the core of AFA's orchestra\, jazz\, choir\, piano and
  composition departments.\nThe Conservatory is an inspiring\, life changin
 g experience for its students. In 2008\, AFA's thirteenth Summer Music Con
 servatory enrolled 332 students from 109 elementary\, middle and senior hi
 gh schools. AFA presented twenty-one free concerts to thousands of area mu
 sic lovers featuring more American works and world premieres than any othe
 r area presenter. More than three out of every five students received tuit
