or the Arts) presents an AFA (American Festival for the Arts) Student Cham
ber Music Recital.\nAFA students from the Orchestra/Chamber Music and Pian
o departments join together in this three-concert series featuring chamber
music ensembles. Works from all eras showcase the subtleties and intricac
ies of chamber music by AFA wind\, brass\, string and piano students. The
AFA Orchestra/Chamber Music and Piano programs are five week intensive pro
grams for Houston-area high school students.\nAmerican Festival for the Ar
ts (AFA) was founded in 1993 by Houston composer J. Todd Frazier to provid
e accessible\, high-quality music education and performance opportunities
for youth and to broaden the audience for both new American works and the
standard classical music repertory.\nTo achieve its mission\, AFA presents
an annual Summer Music Conservatory and Concert Series. This unique and a
cclaimed community-based music education program\, featuring faculty membe
rs drawn from the nations' finest educators\, performers\, composers and c
onductors\, has become recognized as an important annual event in the cult
ural life of Southeast Texas and as a model for similar programs around th
e nation. A rigorous curriculum that includes large and small ensemble per
formance\, music theory/enrichment classes and private lessons forms the c
ore of AFA's orchestra\, jazz\, choir\, piano and composition departments.
\nThe Conservatory is an inspiring\, life changing experience for its stud
ents. In 2008\, AFA's thirteenth Summer Music Conservatory enrolled 332 st
udents from 109 elementary\, middle and senior high schools. AFA presented
twenty-one free concerts to thousands of area music lovers featuring more
American works and world premieres than any other area presenter. More th
