\nAFA's Composition department shines tonight in performances of new chamb
er music pieces (performed by AFA faculty artists) and ballets written by
AFA student composers and choreographed and performed by members of Ben St
evenson's Houston Ballet Academy. This nationally recognized collaboratio
n between AFA and HBA is in its twelfth summer and has produced more than
50 world premiere works.\nAmerican Festival for the Arts (AFA) was founded
in 1993 by Houston composer J. Todd Frazier to provide accessible\, high-
quality music education and performance opportunities for youth and to bro
aden the audience for both new American works and the standard classical m
usic repertory.\nTo achieve its mission\, AFA presents an annual Summer Mu
sic Conservatory and Concert Series. This unique and acclaimed community-b
ased music education program\, featuring faculty members drawn from the na
tions' finest educators\, performers\, composers and conductors\, has beco
me recognized as an important annual event in the cultural life of Southea
st Texas and as a model for similar programs around the nation. A rigorous
curriculum that includes large and small ensemble performance\, music the
ory/enrichment classes and private lessons forms the core of AFA's orchest
 ra\, jazz\, choir\, piano and composition departments.\nThe Conservatory i
s an inspiring\, life changing experience for its students. In 2008\, AFA'
s thirteenth Summer Music Conservatory enrolled 332 students from 109 elem

certs to thousands of area music lovers featuring more American works and
world premieres than any other area presenter. More than three out of ever
y five students received tuition assistance from the AFA Scholarship Enric
hment Fund.\nArrive early for a good seat for this unique and inspiring ev
ent. Presented in Partnership with Ben Stevenson's Houston Ballet Academy
and Generously Underwritten by Ruby & Melvin Sondock/Annette & Hal Kuntz.
