DESCRIPTION:Event Name: Bon Voyage\nEvent Url: http://www.artshound.com/eve
nt/detail/26875/Bon_Voyage\nEvent Date Begin: 2009-07-01\nEvent Date End:
2009-08-03\n\nThe Artists' Alliance of Sugar Land presents the exhibition
Bon Voyage\, journey of life brush painting exhibition by local artist Li
 m Chung. \nBon Voyage \na poem by Lim\nChung Feb 27th\, 2009\n \nEvery pie
ce of my work is a journey\,\nA journey that has no beginning nor ending\,
 \n&ldquo\;Mobius strip&rdquo\; may explain this&hellip\;&hellip\;&hellip\;
&hellip\;&hellip\;\nOr may I say the word &ldquo\;gene&rdquo\;?\nA gene fr
 om my Father.\n \nI love travelling&hellip\;&hellip\;..\nTravel on a journ
ey into the past\, present and future.\nI travelled into the past by books
\, music\, arts and etc.\nVia different transportations and my five senses
 \, I see the present.\nThrough history and experiences\, I visualize the f
uture.\n \nWhen I was very young\,\nI flied to China to pick up the four t
reasures of the study\,\nAnd tried to write and draw like literati.\nWith
the brush and ink in monotone\,\nI wrote phrases from great philosophers.
\nConfucius had a lot of advice for me to be a good person.\nTaoism taught
me &ldquo\;To remain whole\, be twisted\;\nTo become straight\, let yours
elf be bent\;\nAnd to become full\, be hollow.&rdquo\;\n \nCalligrapher Ma
ster Liu told me my calligraphy need to have bone and flesh.\nMost of the
traditional brush painting artists had something in common&hellip\;.\nThey
were very wise men during their time.\nBut how come their paintings did n
ot have perspective\nAnd always floated on the air?\nTravel beyond the tim
 e and space (????) was the answer.\n \nThe multi-culture in the Southeast
Asia hinted to me that\nThere were people with different skin color living
on the other side of the globe.\nYet\, we had one thing in common\,\nWe w
ere all attracted towards the center of the sphere.\nA picture came into m
y mind\,\nLot of colorful push pins pinned into a highly textured ball.\n
 \nWhen I was a teenager\,\nI sailed my boat to Europe&hellip\;&hellip\;\nI
open my eyes to colors\, light source\, values\, proportions and etc.\nI
finally understood the works of Michelangelo after I turned myself to Lord
.\n \nRembrandt told me brush could be used in either way\,\nThe bristle s
ide and the wooden side\,\nSo as to the texture of a surface\;\nThe smooth
  and the textured.\nHe also taught me the word &ldquo\;Chiaroscuro&rdquo\;
(contrast between light and dark)\,\nThat reminded me about &ldquo\;Tai-c
 hi&ldquo\;(balance between Ying & Yang).\nYes\, the push-pin picture came
into my mind again.\n \nMonet showed me how to put colors together in an i
mpressionism way.\nI was truly impressed when Picasso noted that his cubis
m were influenced by oriental art\,\nHe had captured the spirit of orienta
l art in such a colorful way.\nBy then I understood the meaning of &ldquo\
;Travel beyond the time and space&rdquo\; (????)\,\nIn a more colorful app
roach.\n \nAt Bauhaus in Germany\,\nI met Walter Gropius\, an architect of
his time.\nWe might have the same profession and vision in first place\,
\nBut our destination was a lot difference.\nHis calling was to merge the
craftsmen and fine art into one\,\nForms follow function is the new name.
\n \nToday\, I am on my endless voyage to an unclear destiny.\nI may stay
in a cocoon for a while before\nI could understand the meaning of\nThe bon
 e and the flesh.\nThe wise butterfly console me\;\nDear Voyager\,\nSufferi
ng is beautiful.\nYou may wish the road is much shorter\, yet\,\nVia suffe
ring\, the bone is strengthened\, and\nIt will produce a beautiful and fra
grance flesh.\n \nEvery piece of art is a journey\,\nOf someone who did it
 .\nSo is mine&hellip\;&hellip\;&hellip\;.\n \nOpening Reception: Saturday\
