DESCRIPTION:Event Name: Almost\, Maine\nEvent Url: http://www.artshound.com
 /event/detail/35847/Almost_Maine\nEvent Date Begin: 2010-02-04\nEvent Date
End: 2010-02-21\n\nBrave Dog Players Present: Almost\, Maine by: John Car
iani. A magical valentine about the residents of Almost\, Maine. (Did we
 mention it's funny?!)\nThe author\, John Cariani's website describes his p
 lay\, Almost\, Maine like this: On a cold\, clear\, moonless Friday night
in the middle of winter\, all is not quite what it seems in the remote\, m
ythical town of Almost\, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-f
illed sky above\, Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of
love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised\; hearts a
re broken. Love is lost\, found\, and confounded.\nBut the bruises heal an
d the hearts mend&mdash\;almost&mdash\;in what has been described as &ldqu
 o\;a comic\, romantic roundelay&rdquo\; by The Wall Street Journal\, &ldqu
 o\;a wooly midwinter night's dream&rdquo\; by The Dallas Observer\, &ldquo
\;love in the time of frostbite&rdquo\; by The New York Sun\, &ldquo\;a sw
eet-natured valentine to fools and idioms&rdquo\; by The Los Angeles Times
 \, &ldquo\;a gem&rdquo\; by Florida Weekly\, &ldquo\;an unapologetically r
omantic fable&rdquo\; by The Arizona Republic\, and &ldquo\;an effervescen
t yet deeply felt tragicomedy&rdquo\; by The Melbourne (Australia) Age. Al
most\, Maine inventively explores the mysteries of the human heart\, touch
ing audiences with laughter\, heartbreak and hope.\nThis is the Houston De
but of Almost\, Maine\, and marks the first production of an exciting new
Houston theatre company\, Brave Dog Players. Brave Dog Players will strive
to produce unique and acclaimed plays that have been overlooked or passed
over by Houston's flagship theatres. The founding members are Philip Lehl
 \, Kim Tobin\, Georgi Silverman & Rick Silverman.\nAbout the playwright: J
ohn Cariani's first play\, Almost\, Maine\, debuted at Portland Stage Comp
any and was named one of the ten best plays of the 2004/2005 regional thea
tre season by The Wall Street Journal. Two years later\, Almost\, Maine op
ened off-Broadway\, and is now featured in New Playwrights: Best Plays of
2006. Since its debut off-Broadway\, Almost\, Maine has been produced by s
ome 300 theatres all over the United States and in places as far flung as
 Mexico\, Korea\, Canada\, Germany\, the United Arab Emirates\, and Austral
ia.\nJohn is currently working on two new plays: Last Gas (also set in nor
thern Maine)\; and an untitled new collection of one act plays\, which he
 describes as &ldquo\;the flip side&rdquo\; of Almost\, Maine.\nPhilip Lehl
will direct Almost\, Maine. Philip is known throughout the Houston arts c
ommunity for his outstanding acting career. He has appeared numerous times
at The Alley\, Stages\, TUTS\, The Houston Symphony\, BCCM and the Housto
n Shakespeare Festival.\nThe cast consists of Chris Hutchison (Alley Theat
re Company Member)\, Kim Tobin\, Georgi Silverman and Rick Silverman. Kim\
, Georgi and Rick all came to Houston from New York City\, where they were
members of the award-winning theatre company\, The Barrow Group. The Barr
ow Group held early workshops in 2003 that helped John Cariani shape the s
cenes that would eventually become Almost\, Maine. Rick Silverman\, Georgi
Silverman and Kim Tobin all participated in those workshops\, and have he
ld a fondness for the play ever since. They are delighted to get the chanc
e to bring the play to Houston audiences.\nBrave Dog Players has assembled
a talented crew to help realize the world that will become Almost\, Maine
. Heading the team will be lighting designer\, Matt Schlief from Rice Univ
 ersity\, and composer/sound designer\, Jessie Gustin.\nThe production is b
eing done in cooperation with Stages Repertory Theatre. It will run in the
