10-04-24\n\nDiverseWorks presents The Rude Mechanicals: The Method Gun\,
created by Rude Mechs | written by Kirk Lynn | directed by Shawn Sides\, A
 pril 22 &ndash\; 24\, 2010\, at 8pm\, at Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex
.\nThe Rude Mechanicals return to Houston with their latest production\, T
he Method Gun. A play that explores the life\, ethos and techniques of act
or training guru\, Stella Burden\, as recounted through the eyes of her st
udents. Burden's training techniques\, The Approach\, fused Western acting
techniques and more dangerous METHODS in an effort to infuse even the sma
llest roles with sex\, death and violence.\nSince 1995\, Rude Mechs has us
ed performance to explore collectivity\, collaboration\, and community. Th
e result is a mercurial slate of 22 original theatrical productions rangin
 g from Low-Fi\, Agit-Prop\, Lec-Dems to Multi-Media\, Romantic-Era\, Close
t Dramas. What they hold in common is bold physicality\, intellectual savv
y\, a preference for the actor above the character\, and an irreverent sen
se of humor. We tour these performances nationally and abroad\; maintain T
he Off Center\, a performance venue for local arts groups of every discipl
ine\; and manage an Arts Access program to ensure that everyone in Austin
who wants to participate in the arts\, can.\nRude Mechs has received over
170 local and national awards and nominations for our work. We've enjoyed
two Off-Broadway premieres and toured to top national venues such as The W
alker Arts Center (Minneapolis\, MN)\, The Wexner Center (Columbus\, OH)\,
and Woolly Mammoth (Washington D.C.). We participate in the international
community of artists by contributing to festivals such Austria's SommerSz
ene\, the Galway Arts Festival\, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, the Kiasm
a Festival\, the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival\, and the Under the Radar
Festival in NYC. Our emergence into this community was marked by a featur
e in the New York Times that identified Rude Mechs as one of three compani
es in the country &ldquo\;making theatre that matters.&rdquo\; We are deep
ly proud to represent Texas as a home for cutting-edge theatrical practice
.\nIn 1999\, Rude Mechs assumed the management of The Off Center\, a perfo
rmance warehouse in East Austin. The Off Center houses a flexible 100-seat
theatre\, the administrative offices of Rude Mechsand studios for visual
artists. The company also presents the work of nationally recognized theat
re artists and produces Grrl Action\, a year-round program in autobiograph
ical writing and performance for teenage girls. Few theatre companies in t
he history of Austin's arts community have seen such an explosion of audie
nce enthusiasm and artistic growth in such a few short years. Most importa
ntly\, the quality and innovation of the company's theatrical productions
have firmly established Rude Mechs as one of Austin's most highly valued c
ultural assets.\nABOUT DIVERSEWORKS ARTSPACE \nKnown for its groundbreakin
g artistic and education programs\, DiverseWorks is one of the premiere co
ntemporary arts centers in the United States. DiverseWorks has been a hub

or artistic projects in all disciplines\, and an advocate for artists worl
dwide. Founded by artists for artists\, DiverseWorks continues its commitm

iences for contemporary art.\n\nStart time: Thursday-Saturday\n8pm
