 d: 2010-03-20\n\nIn conjunction with FotoFest 2010\, Hooks-Epstein Galleri
es will present two exhibitions. The exhibitions open Saturday\, February
 20\, 2010\, at 11:00 a.m. A reception for the artists will follow from 6:0
0 to 8:00 p.m.\nIn Reading Between the Lines\, Julie Brook Alexander photo
graphs landscapes the way that quilters collect fabrics. She looks for bit
s and pieces to record for use in her studio. Alexander then gathers scene
s that she can join with unrelated images in a collage. The specific techn
ique for creating these images unites photography\, painting and collage.
Alexander states\, 'The composite landscapes possess tension between elega
ntly orchestrated large views and areas of complex detail. The combination
s balance light and dark tones as they reconstruct the architecture of phy
sical space. This series is both active and reflective\; it is simultaneou
sly personal and universal.'\nIn Jim Falick's exhibition\, The People of t
he Village\, the photographs were taken at a Mkirikani Massai village in s
outheastern Kenya. The villagers welcomed tourists and for a fee\, they ga
ve tours and performed ceremonial dances. While it all may seem a remnant
of colonialism\, the money earned is significant and very important for ca
sh purchases from the nearby town. Falick states\, 'What most interested m
e was to capture how their wonderful faces express their feeling and their
attitudes while dealing with visitors. The images shown here were made wh
en they were not posing and usually did not know a photograph was being ma
de.'\nReading Between the Lines and The People of the Village continue thr
