\nThe Menil Collection & Byzantine Fresco Chapel present a Roundtable Disc
ussion: Cultural Heritage 2.0: Participatory Stewardship. Leaders from the
arts\, science\, and industry consider the meaning of &ldquo\;ownership.&
rdquo\; Panel Moderated by Kristina Van Dyke. Thursday\, November 3\, at
 7:00 p.m.\nWho owns a particular work of art\, idea\, concept\, process\,
or story? Which museum or library\, country or government\, people or pers
on? Today such questions are blurring lines and crossing disciplines as th
ey challenge professionals in the arts\, law\, medicine\, science\, busine
ss\, and industry.\nIn recent years cultural heritage has tended to be see
n as an issue of the rights of nations or institutions to make ultimate cl
aims of ownership over works of art. National and international authoritie
s have been confronted with many challenges\, yielding wildly triumphant o
r deeply unsatisfying results.\nThe Menil set a pioneering example with it
s historic agreement with the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus to rescue\,
restore\, and exhibit the 13th century frescoes currently housed in the By
zantine Fresco Chapel on the museum campus. Concluding in 2012\, this agre
ement reflects the Menil's commitment to responsible stewardship of works
from nations and cultures around the world.\nCultural Heritage 2.0: Partic
ipatory Stewardship will explore a broad set of cultural heritage issues\,
including how local and global concepts of ownership and identity affect
the outcomes of biomedical research\, the discovery and accessibility of n
ew energy sources\, the management of cultural artifacts\, and the shaping
of public policy.\nJoin the Menil and Byzantine Fresco Chapel for this fa
scinating and timely discussion. Admission is free\, but seating is limite
 d. \n\nPanelists:\n\nJoseph Flowers manages Software and Regulatory Compli
ance for Well Services at Schlumberger. An engineer\, he is an inventor in
volved in numerous American and foreign patents.\nRex Koontz is Director o
f the School of Art at the University of Houston and an art historian spec
ializing in Ancient Mesoamerican culture. His research and practice is con
cerned with the implications of digitization projects for scholars' and th
e public's concepts of material objects and access to them.\nJames Leach i
s Professor of Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland wher
e he is a specialist on New Guinea. His research focuses on the transforma
tive effects of technology on knowledge production\, creativity\, and conc
epts of ownership.\nKirstin Matthews is a fellow in Science and Technology
Policy at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice Univ
ersity. Her research addresses ethical issues that arise at the intersecti
on of biomedical research and public policy.\nRobin Nava is Worldwide Gene
ral Counsel for Well Services at Schlumberger. She is an expert in intelle
ctual property whose work addresses diverse notions of knowledge productio
n and ownership throughout the world.\nKristina Van Dyke is Curator for Co
llections and Research at the Menil Collection and a specialist in the art
s of Africa. Her research explores the impact of cultural heritage policie
s on the study of West African history.\nPhoto: Interior detail\, Byzantin
