Job Description—Major Duties

Reports to: Director of Development

Part-time position

History and Mission
HCP is located in the heart of Houston’s museum district within walking distance of The Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel. Our mission is to increase society’s understanding and appreciation of photography and its evolving role in contemporary culture.  HCP strives to encourage artists, build audiences, stimulate dialogue, and promote inquiry about photography and related media through education programs, exhibitions, publications, fellowship programs, and community collaborations.  We create meaningful photography experiences.

Houston Center for Photography enjoys a long-standing reputation for presenting exhibitions and educational programs that are of the highest cultural and artistic merit.  As one of the only organizations in Houston focusing on the presentation of contemporary photography, HCP fills a particular niche within the city’s vibrant and diverse visual arts landscape.  Both local and national media outlets regularly review our exhibitions and we collaborate often with many local organizations.  HCP is dedicated to exhibiting important work that is not being shown elsewhere in Houston.

The Membership and Gallery Assistant will provide part-time support to HCP’s small, energetic staff.  Successful candidates will possess a strong customer service background, an attention to detail and the ability to problem solve with tact and maturity.  Ideal candidates will be passionate about promoting the art of photography.

This position will work closely with the Director of Development on administrative aspects of the organization’s contributed income, with a focus on maintaining the organization’s robust Membership offerings.

Membership Responsibilities

  • Coordinate growing HCP membership – including membership drives, renewal notice schedule, lapsed member campaigns, and membership affinity groups
  • Maintain HCP’s donor records consistent with HCP’s policies and procedures
  • Ability to process and maintain confidential and sensitive information
  • Processes membership letters, renewals and other correspondence
  • Process donations and thank you letters
  • Develops membership retention plan including follow up thank you letters and surveys.
  • Coordinate Capture Crawl and other members-only events

Gallery Responsibilities

  • Maintain gallery with an emphasis on ensuring positive visitor experiences
  • Open and close gallery on the weekend, with closing duties twice during the week
  • Answer phones, greet visitors, assist with questions
  • Respond to email correspondence dealing with membership and general inquiries
  • Monitor and maintain gallery/Learning Center facilities
  • Register/check in students for Learning Center classes
  • Maintain gallery attendance and audience reports
  • Assist with projects related to Exhibition/Learning Center/Development
  • Help with event set-up and clean-up

Wages and Schedule:
This position is part-time, four days each week with two days Monday – Thursday from 2-9 p.m. and split weekend days (Saturday and Sunday) from 10:30am – 2:30pm and 2:30pm-7-pm.  Average number of hours is approximately 25 per week. Salary is paid at a competitive hourly rate.
