Discovery Green is pleased to announce that the Downtown Green Market, the weekly organic urban market will move from Thursday afternoons to Sundays, beginning January 25. Managed by the Urban Harvest, the urban market has been a popular destination for visitors to the park since its debut last April. The market will be open each Sunday afternoon from 12:00- 4:00 pm.

Urban Harvest will continue to host their popular Urban Harvest Farmers Market at Eastside, which occurs Saturdays from 8 a.m. to Noon at 3000 Richmond at Eastside.

Discovery Green Programming Director Susanne Theis remarks, "In our partnership with Urban Harvest, we have a tremendous opportunity to connect park constituents and the Houston community with local growers. The timing is fortuitous it's the growing season in Houston!"

Central City Co-op pioneered the successful market at Discovery Green which began shortly after the park opened in Spring 2008 and continued to operate the market through the end of March. With the Co-op's blessings, Discovery Green transitioned to its new market operator, Urban Harvest, which will be able to sustain more local farmers and vendors, offer a wider variety of choices for market patrons, and eventually bring cooking classes, live chef demonstrations, and a series of gardening classes.

Discovery Green works with many community partners to offer diverse programming at the downtown park. Urban Harvest's mission is to promote healthy communities, sound nutrition and respect for the environment by educating children and adults, and facilitating harvest and habitat gardens. It is a natural partner for Discovery Green's Healthy Living Series.

"We are pleased with the success of the Urban Harvest Farmers Market at Eastside, the largest direct-producer farmers market in greater Houston, and excited to expand our farmers market program to such a spectacular location in the heart of downtown Houston," says Urban Harvest Executive Director Mark Bowen. "Each market will have its own distinct personality and flair, with something for people to discover and enjoy, no matter which market they visit."

Visitors to the market at Discovery Green can expect to see their old favorites each Sunday and discover new favorites as vendors are added.
