Archway Gallery (Dunlavy location) presents an exhibition by artist David Connolly:  Sacred Space. On view February 7 through March 5.

Winter can often be a time of creative introspection, when the spiritual side of artists manifests itself in diverse forms and media. To see the results of this contemplative facet of the art world firsthand, come to Archway Gallery in Montrose and experience David Connolly's "Sacred Space."

A Bellaire resident, Connolly has been actively painting for over 30 years. A graduate of Washington & Lee University with a degree in geology, Connolly has used the travel associated with his profession as a petroleum geologist to inspire his works. Connolly has studied for a number of years at the Glassell School of Art and has had exhibitions at Christ Church Cathedral and the Glassell School of Art.

"This show explores two major themes which I have been exploring in my art over the last several years," Connolly explains. "The first theme "Sacred Space" is inspired by ancient sacred sites and altars, particularly those from Turkey and Slovakia. As a geologist I am particularly drawn to the sacred uses of standing stones and stone altars. The second theme, "Life of Birds" is inspired by the writings of the naturalist David Attenborough exploring the fascinating adaptations of different bird species. All my work is unified by a love of the fluidity of watercolor, and its ability to express the essence or holiness of a place. I am especially indebted to my three mentors, Lucas Johnson, Polly Hammett, and Arthur Turner, whose support and encouragement has been invaluable."
