Wordsmyth Theater Company announces a New Play Reading Series by Texas playwrights for three readings beginning in March. The goal of the reading series is to provide playwrights the opportunity to work with directors, actors and audiences to get valuable feedback on their plays.  Each reading will also be followed by a talkback session with the author.

Wordsmyth will be presenting these readings in collaboration with Actor’s Gym, an actor’s resource group created by Philip Lehl and Kim Tobin, whose members meet weekly at Stages.

These readings are free and open to the public.

The three plays selected for the reading series, from a call for plays last December, are: Stop, Traveler by Eric James, “All the Pretty Little Horses” by Nancy Geyer, and “The Good Son” by Joe Barnes, all Houston-based playwrights.

    Synopsis: Stop, Traveler
    Stop, Traveler
will be the first reading and here is the author’s synopsis. “(Stop, Traveler) Ten years have passed since Shawn Alexander has returned to his Midwest home. Ten years since his family turned their backs on him for being gay. An invitation by his estranged brother leads to a homecoming that will upend his life. The turmoil he feels is complicated by the crises facing the people he once knew and loved.”

    Schedule of Readings:

Dates: (2nd Monday of each month)
March 9th - "Stop, Traveler" by Eric James
April 13th - "All the Pretty Little Horses" by Nancy Geyer
May 11th - "The Good Son" by Joe Barnes

    Wordsmyth Theater Company History
Wordsmyth Theater Company was created in 2007 by Elizabeth Earle, Karen Schlag and Asher Wyndham, and saw its first production of two original works, “Cat, Mouse, Bird and Boy” by Elizabeth Ann Earle and “Veteran Silas” by Asher Wyndham at Company OnStage that year. Since then they have been developing programs for the Company to effectively aid writers in the development of new works.

    Mission Statement
Wordsmyth Theater Company is a Houston-based playwright’s theatre dedicated to the development of new theatrical works from formative stages though full production. Through workshops and readings of plays with directors, dramaturgy and performers at various stages, as well as through lectures, seminars, classes and web resources, Wordsmyth aims to provide the playwright with a wide range of assistance in realizing their artistic vision.

    Programming
This reading series, highlighting Texas playwrights, is the first of many resources that Wordsmyth is creating to help emerging and established playwrights. We are currently planning a second, national, play reading series for the fall, two guest seminars, and will soon be offering playwriting workshops and classes.
