Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival
April 4-April 5, 2009
The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival is set to hold its fourth annual event April 4 and 5, 2009.
The festival is a juried fine art show featuring 200 national and regional artists of 14 various mediums selling their original creations. Festival hours are 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults. Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Proceeds from the festival benefit local partners including The Pavilion Partners, The Woodlands Art League and The Woodlands Town Center Theatre.
The event takes place along the Waterway from The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center alongside The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and culminates at Town Green Park. This beautifully landscaped site in the heart of The Woodlands features ample free parking, water taxi and trolley service, concessions within the festival site and an array of eateries and shops within walking distance of the festival.
Features of the festival include interactive art activities for children in Town Green Park, student art exhibitions from public and private schools in Montgomery County, entertainment on two stages, dining selections at the “Palette Café” featuring cuisine from P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and Jasper’s Gourmet Backyard Cuisine. On Saturday morning, area businesses and organizations get into the creative act as art floats of their own design parade down the Waterway.
The Floating Art Parade gets underway at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival on April 4, in conjunction with the opening day of the festival. The parade features floating art pieces created and designed by local businesses and organizations. The floats parade down The Waterway from Town Green Park to The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and then parade back towards Town Green Park. The floats remain moored for public viewing throughout the festival.
Participants are asked to design and create a float reflecting this year’s theme “Outer Space.” The best entry receives The Waterway Cup, a unique piece of art designed by one of the festival artists. Festival jurors vote for the best entry.
At this year’s festival, we are presenting a new area highlighting artists’ work which relates to outdoor spaces. The Outer Spaces Gallery features art that is made for outdoor use or reflects outer spaces. Artists in various media present their vision of outdoor spaces. Explore the Outer Spaces Gallery located just west of the Palette Café. Relax at the resting area on the lawn overlooking the Waterway across from the new Riva Row Boathouse.
The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival has announced the selection of Rod Garrett, an acrylic sculptor from Grant, FL, as the featured artist for the fourth annual event. For the past 35 years, Garrett has worked with acrylic creating sculptures with the illusions of continuous movement and coloration that reveals itself differently with every angle. Rod carves, colorizes and shapes each sculpture entirely by hand in his studio, rendering wonderful one-of-a-kind creations.
"Rod was selected as our featured artist for 2009 because we wanted to highlight three-dimensional works of art created in an engaging, joyful spirit. Rod has many fans in the Houston area that collect his work and has been a previous Best of Show award winner at our festival as well as many others in the United States,” said Brenda Gottlieb, festival director.
The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, now in its fourth year, is produced by The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization.
