Bayou Bend, the American decorative arts center of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, hosts a free Family Day the third Sunday of each month from September through May.

Sunday, April 19:  The Roots of Entertainment.

The roots of American entertainment traditions run deep at Bayou Bend as we celebrate the history of leisure and diversion. Explore the unique styles of vaudeville and ragtime through performances, as well as craft workshops and activities that celebrate American innovations in dance, sport, and dining. Visitors will also enjoy children’s games and house tours along with refreshments in the visitor’s cottage.

Visitors to Rienzi will enjoy performances by The Zydeco Dots and The Texas Mime Theatre, children’s crafts in the gardens along with story-time tours, scavenger hunts in the house throughout the day and the Houston Museum of Natural Science will bring some friendly Texas creatures for all to enjoy.

Stationed docents will be available for tours throughout the day. Refreshments will be served.

Bayou Bend’s Family Day programs are designed to encourage adults and children to explore American history. Each month features a different theme and a variety of related activities and performances geared toward educating and entertaining children. On Family Day, volunteers from the Houston Junior Woman’s Club show visitors the first floor of Bayou Bend.
