If you were in Houston in 1986 (celebrating Houston’s 150th anniversary) you’ll remember the spectacular Jean Michel Jarre concert, Rendez-vous Houston (pictured), an epic electronic music, light show and fireworks presentation on the rooftops of Houston’s downtown skyscrapers.

You can relive that event through a one-night only screening and live performance on Buffalo Bayou. Deja Rendez-Vous: A Respectacle on Buffalo Bayou is presented by The Center for Land Use Interpretation (The CLUI) and SIMPARCH, with artist Jesse Stiles, and will take place off the shoreline of Tony Marron Park. Viewers, watching from the park, will witness the sound, video, and light show as it is presented on a platform in the Bayou.

Deja Rendez-Vous: A Respectacle on Buffalo Bayou will take place on a “floating platform,” created by design/build collective, SIMPARCH, for water-based activities along Buffalo Bayou. The platform is a public art commission, co-sponsored by Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP) and University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts (Mitchell Center), which will be used throughout the year for artistic projects related the Buffalo Bayou.

Performance is outdoors on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. Viewers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets.

• The CLUI has been in residence with Mitchell Center for one year, which culminated in the current Blaffer Gallery, The Art Museum of the University of Houston exhibition, “Texas Oil: Landscape of an Industry,” on view through March 29, 2009. Various programs, lectures, and events have been scheduled in conjunction with this exhibition.

• This performance and SIMPARCH commissioned work is part of the BBP’s new public art initiative: Confluence: Points of View on Buffalo Bayou; and the Mitchell Center Symposium, Systems of Sustainability (S.O.S.), March 27-29. www.mitchellcenterforarts.org.

Confluence: Points of View on Buffalo Bayou, a contemporary art project of Buffalo Bayou Partnership, introduces innovative public art within the environs of Houston’s historic waterway. In collaboration with the city’s leading arts institutions, Confluence is inviting regional, national and international artists to create temporary and permanent public artworks, integrated programming and special events in response to Buffalo Bayou’s history, environment and present-day use.
