In collaboration with the American Turkish Association,  the Rothko Chapel presents Modern Turkish Sufi Music with Tolga Unaldi on Reed Flute Tolga Unaldi, Ney (Reed Flute).  Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m.

Unaldi plays the ney, a traditional Turkish end-blown reed flute that has been played for 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest musical instruments in continuous use. According to the great Sufi scholar Rumi, music is the language of God, and it is through music that the soul is touched and man is able to perceive the infinite. The resonant, melancholy sound of the ney is akin to man's own yearning to reach oneness with God.

Unaldi's program will include traditional Turkish Music, classical western music with the reed flute, and contemporary sounds and compositions on reed flute.

Born in Ankara, Turkey in 1975, Unaldi has undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Ankara State Conservatory Department of Musicology, Ethnomusicology and Folklore and currently actively studies and well as performs on ethnic wind instruments.
