Steel Lounge Underground is a monthly event showcasing Houston based musical artists performing live in the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Steel Lounge Underground showcases Houston’s diversity and talent by bringing together musical artists representing a variety of genres and attracts an audience representing all walks of life. During the event, the audience is free to explore the exhibitions currently on display within the Contemporary Arts Museum.

Visual arts and sound converge the last Friday of every month to make beautiful music together at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston’s Steel Lounge Underground. Presented with DJ Pooks and Josh Zulu, Steel Lounge Underground combines a rotating trio of musical artists who do what they do best—play music.

Join us April 24, 2009, 8-11pm for this month’s talented lineup: The Mathletes, Suraj K. aka SDF3, and DJ Witnes. There is no charge for admission; cash bar.

    ABOUT THE MUSICAL ARTISTS
Led by Joe Mathlete, The Mathletes has been called a “lo-fi, indie-pop spectacle” all about the music by Houston Chronicle. The band’s current lineup includes Ryan Goodland (bass, trumpet, guitar, keyboards, vocals), Brett Taylor (guitar) and Jeff Goodyear (drums), but the group boasts a revolving cast of more than fifty people who have been part of once-and-future Mathletes.

Suraj K. aka SDF3 (Gritsy, Karma) needs BASS in his life so he helps create it. A child of the music of the 80s, Suraj K. has been known to drop a beat or two. He’ll take you from London’s grimy electro music, UK garage scene, dubstep, back to the early drum and bass of the 80s with everything in between. But wherever he decides to go, this bass aficionado is going to take you with him.

Music fans can expect the freshest beats from DJ Witnes’s unique sets, which include everything dance-worthy from funk-infused soul to bubblegum 80s, booty electro, and classic hip hop. “I come from a hip hop background, but what some people don’t understand is that a DJ who can fuse different genres of music and keep the party live, is hip hop no matter what” says Witnes.

    CURRENT EXHIBITION
Perspectives 165: Contents Under Pressure (through May 10, 2009) is the sixth exhibition of work by Houston-area teens organized by the CAMH’s Teen Council. Tasked with openly interpreting the exhibition theme of containers and containment, over forty teen-aged artists are represented with works ranging from painting and sculpture to installation and video. Juried by artist Dario Robleto.

    STEEL LOUNGE UNDERGROUND SUPPORT
Steel Lounge Underground would like to especially thank DJ Pooks and Josh Zulu of Soular Grooves (www.soulargrooves.com ). Listen to Soular Grooves every Saturday night from 9:30 PM to midnight on KPFT 90.1 FM.
