Moores School of Music: Texas Guitar Quartet

The University of Houston Moores School of Music presents the Texas Guitar Quartet, Saturday, June 6, 2009, at 7:30pm in Dudley Recital Hall.
Described as “wonderful” by Classical Guitar Alive host Tony Morris, this group was originally formed in 2005 as a graduate guitar ensemble at the University of Texas at Austin. Since then, TxGQ has garnered critical acclaim through various guitar festivals in Texas, and have premiered multiple works by Texas-based composers.
Isaac Bustos – Born in Managua, Nicaragua, Isaac is quickly being recognized as one of the top players of his generation. He has performed around the world both as soloist and with orchestras. Mr. Bustos has also been a top prizewinner in many international competitions. Isaac is currently completing his doctoral degree with Professor Adam Holzman at the University of Texas, and is on faculty at Texas A&M University Department of Performance Studies.
Jonathan Dotson – an avid supporter of new music, Jonathan has premiered many new works for guitar. He holds multiple degrees in guitar performance from Kennesaw State University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied with Mary Akerman and Adam Holzman respectively. He has claimed top prizes at several international competitions. Mr. Dotson is currently completing his doctoral degree with Adam Holzam at the University of Texas at Austin.
Alejandro Montiel – Alejandro has been playing guitar since 1993. He studied with Adam Holzman and Julian Gray, and is currently completing his doctoral degree at the University of Texas. Mr. Montiel has also performed in master classes for many of today’s top players. Alejandro has performed throughout the US and Italy to much critical acclaim. Mr. Montiel is on faculty at Sam Houston State University, where he leads the classical guitar program.
Oscar Villanueva - started his classical guitar studies in the year 1997 with Carlos Posada at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. In 2001 he was awarded a guitar scholarship at the University of North Texas under the tutelage of Thomas Johnson. Oscar performed as a soloist as well as in chamber music with the Nova Ensemble, and also premiered at the University of North Texas, Icarus at the Cabaret Voltaire for two guitarists by Joseph Klein. In 2003 Oscar was awarded a guitar scholarship at the University of Texas, where he completed his BM studies and is currently working on his Masters with Adam Holzman.
