Artists from all over the greater Houston area will converge on the Heights once again for the First Saturday Art Market in the Houston Heights. The Market, is held on the first Saturday of each month and open during the summer from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

During the summer the market is open only at night on the first Saturday of the month, offering Houstonians a unique alternative to Saturday night activities.Local retailers have extended their hours into the evening in conjunction with the market's summer shows.

Now going into its fifth year, the First Saturday Art Market features up to 40 vendors with original paintings, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics and more.  Most artists are local, while others travel from the Austin, Bryan, College Station and Brenham to participate.

Keeping with the eclectic nature of the 100 year old neighborhood, the market has a few vendors that offer handmade soaps, fresh breads, spices and infused olive oils.  Local musicians always entertain and the market has seen some regulars like Duke Jones, David Fahl of Fahl & Folk, The Daniel Reich Trio and the Fun Country Band.

Entertaining the crowds of art patrons and enthusiasts June 6 from 8-10 p.m.will be The Danielle Reich Trio. Fahl & Folk will kick things off at 6 p.m. But live entertainment is not the only attraction as the name First Saturday Arts Market implies. There will also be art in abundance, with a dazzling selection of professional and emerging artists on hand at the summer markets.

The featured artist for June will be Ralph Parker.  Parker, a McKinney resident, is known for his landscapes and capturing the essence of the outdoors in his work.

"I paint in gouache, also called opaque watercolor, and I love painting the landscape," Parker explains. "When painting in the studio, I try to hear the birds, and those mysterious buzzing sounds one hears when the sun is shining and the dust kicks up from each step down a dirt road. But most of all, I love it when people look at one of my paintings and say, "That reminds me of..." Then I know I'm moving in the right direction."
