Texas Repertory Theatre presents a terrific comedy to close their 4th season.  The Miss Firecracker Contest runs May 6 through May 24.

When Beth Henley won a Pulitzer-Prize for her play Crimes of the Heart, few had any idea that she had already written another hit comedy, the hysterical and touching The Miss Firecracker Contest. This wonderfully eccentric play takes place in Brookhaven, Mississippi and follows our heroine Carnelle as she negotiates a mine-field of crazy southern characters in her quest to leave town "in a blaze of glory"! 

The Miss Firecracker Contest is the hilarious and heartfelt account of one woman's quest for acceptability in a small southern town -- a quest that involves tap-dancing, self-improvement, roman candles, soul searching, and a hoop skirt that won't behave! When Carnelle Scott (known locally as Miss Hot Tamale) enters the local beauty pageant, poignant eccentricity and outright hilarity ensue. Although the play has been described as a torrential downpour of humor by The New York Times, at the heart of this crowd-pleasing comic play is the story of a family's journey to accept each other, and the hilariously unconventional ways in which they go about it.

An honest-to-goodness tale of redemption and second chances, The Miss Firecracker Contest is sure to become one of your favorites.

Directed by Associate Artistic Director Steve Fenley and featuring an all-star cast of Kay Allmand, Maggie Flecknoe, Jeff Lane, Joshua Estrada, Jen Lucy, and Susan Draper, The Miss Firecracker Contest is sure to leave you laughing and cheering, just the sort of entertaining experience that reminds us why is the theatre is so much fun!
