Anya Tish Gallery is pleased to present Maxim Wakultschik: Closely Watched Trains, on view May 15 - June 13, 2009.

Maxim’s work employs figurative images, mainly faces, both in the form of paintings and objects. The objects, or reliefs, are often painted on padded or “upholstered” canvases. Although the images are reduced to brushed outlines and spots of color, the three-dimensional surface, subdivided by nails, produces curved cushioned surfaces that emphasize facial features.

Wakultschik’s larger- then- life portraits are painted sparingly in one flat color with the use of strong negative shapes. A closer look however reveals a surprising surface comprised of a multitude of expressive mini-portraits.  The artist bypasses classical representation and turns it inside out. He aims towards a creation of a type of logo, towards symbolic signs by using the method of reflection, juxtaposition of positive and negative shapes, and rhythmical repetition towards infinity.

Born in Byelorussia in 1973, Maxim Wakultschik lives and works in Dusseldorf, Germany, where he studied at the Dusseldorf Art Academy under Beate Schiff and Janis Kounellis. His paintings, objects, and installations employ figurative images which are multifaceted and dynamic in process.
