The Jung Center of Houston presents Socratic Psychotherapy: A Lecture on the Ancient Roots of the Talking Cure.  Acclaimed teacher and scholar Daniel Silvermintz explores the fascinating connections between psychotherapy and philosophy.

Why does Socrates always ask questions and never give answers? Perhaps our frustration in the face of his claim not to know anything results from our preconceived notion that he is a philosopher and not a psychotherapist. This lecture will examine his use of the talking cure on his discussion partners. Before we even realize it, we become one of Socrates' patients and are answering his questions rather than looking for him to give us the answers.

Daniel Silvermintz, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Humanities at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, where his innovative teaching practices have twice been recognized with university awards. A former Visiting Scholar in the Critical Theory Institute at the University of California-Irvine, his current research focuses on psychology and ethics in Greek philosophy.
