March 11-21, 2010 Houston Ballet presents American at Heart. Together in one program: three ballets that changed the landscape of American dance.
It wasn't West Side Story that made American choreographer Jerome Robbins a celebrity, but his first ballet, Fancy Free, staged when he was just 24. Though he was born in Russia, George Balanchine is often regarded as America's greatest choreographer. His Apollo traces the birth of the god and his flirtation with the muses who inspire him. Though he's not American-born, Christopher Bruce's Hush is. It's a comic and moving celebration of life set to the music of Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin
Set to a rousing score by Leonard Bernstein, Fancy Free depicts the adventures of three sailors on shore leave who meet two girls on a hot summer night in New York City in the 1940s. An American classic, Fancy Free was later developed into the hit musical On The Town.
A seminal piece in the history of twentieth century ballet, George Balanchine’s Apollo traces the birth of the god of music, poetry and prophecy -- and his education through (and flirtation with) the three muses Terpsichore, Calliope, and Polyhymnia.
Christopher Bruce’s comic and moving Hush chronicles the adventures of a family of performers, and is set to a musical celebration of life – from youth to old age – by Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin.
