FrenetiCore presents a Phlegmatics Record Release Party June 27th! Cost: Free!

Once there was a band called The Phlegmatics. They lived in the far-off, exotic local of Houston, Texas. Ethan “Big E Money” Marshall played drums. Does the guy have chops? No, he’s not old enough to grow significant sideburns yet, but he’s quite handy with an axe, hence his part-time job in Houston's vital logging industry. But he can really play guitar and people generally just seem to think he’s hot. You’d better not mess with Jonas “Jules” Velasco. If he doesn’t get you with his fat bass lines or his smooth vocal stylings, he may catch you in the mouth with a roundhouse kick. No worries though as long as you stay on his good side, which his mom thinks is his left. Bringing up the rear…is Jonathan “4 Eyes” Marshall. You might have beaten him up in grade school, or Junior High, or maybe you sat next to him in Latin club (or all three). When he’s not watching sci-fi reruns or organizing his stamp collection, he’s strumming guitar and verbalizing his deepest, darkest thoughts.

These heroes, this collection of misfits, this band of brothers (really, Jonathan & Ethan are brothers), came together to spread love and good computer skills to the world around them. And to play some rock n' roll. Inspired by predecessors such as The Police, The Descendents, and Weezer, Ethan, Jonas, and Jonathan started jamming together in July of 2003, and they quickly took a short break, because jamming is hard work, then proceeded to turn out a batch of catchy tunes that would soon coalesce as their independent release, Alumnus.

Along with the recording of their first album, The Phlegmatics were joined by Dave “Dad” Marshall on lead guitar and they played a slew of tight, energetic live gigs in, around and about the local club scene, enjoying a larger and larger smattering of applause. They also enjoyed some airtime on the alternative rock radio station 94.5 The Buzz. Somehow, The Houston Chronicle got wind of this and did a short, but very sweet article about the band. Not to be outdone, The Chronicle’s arch-nemesis, The Houston Press, nominated the guys for their 2005 Houston Press Music Award “Best Pop-Punk Band”. “Oh yeah?” said The Chronicle. “Well we’ll choose The Phlegmatics to feature in our 2005 Ultimate Houston Section as Houston’s Ultimate Geek Band!”

Settle down fellas, there’s enough Phlegmatics for everyone. Well, unlike the rose-colored view presented in the preceding paragraph, the life of a band is rough…carrying equipment, thankless rehearsals, taking out the trash, thankless autograph signings, good hygiene, the inability to be recognized in public…in short, what story needs any problems as mundane as aliens or vampires when it contains hard working musicians? Well, that's the way it is for this young band just beginning its adventure in the exciting yet dangerous world of the music business.

This much can be said however; The Phlegmatics (also known as The Hot One, The Tough One, The Nerdy One and Pop) will be bringing their driving brand of Power Pop Punk to a club, website, record store, radio station, or junior high school multi-purpose room near you.

"When one contemplates The Phlegmatics, the words pithy, terse and raucous spring to mind. They play powerful music with a punk edge and a bit of geek angst thrown in for good measure. Attendance at their concerts has also been known to cure diseases and generate great wealth."
