Ars Lyrica’s 2009-2010 season offers a fantastic musical excursion: London, Naples, Paris, and Rome await — and you don’t need to get on an airplane or pack a bag! Our musical “Grand Tour” follows a path trod by generations of young people to soak up the culture of distant nations. What they heard is what’s on our menu: some of the most extraordinary music of the Baroque era, realized on period instruments in the superb acoustics of the Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall.

Highlights of the season include the American première of J. A. Hasse’s magical serenata Marc Antonio e Cleopatra, a collaboration with the Houston Chamber Choir in celebration of Henry Purcell’s 350th birthday, and a revival of Handel’s delightful Clori, Tirsi e Fileno. New Year’s Eve 2009 will be especially festive this year, with a Neapolitan theme for not only the program but the gala reception and silent auction as well. Our lineup of soloists has never been more impressive.

    Sunday, May 9, 2010 5:00 p.m. Roman Holiday.

Don’t miss this revival of Clori, Tirsi e Fileno, Handel’s joyous romp through the most thoroughly Roman of Baroque musical genres, the dramatic cantata. This “final stop” on our 2009-10 season tour features mezzo-soprano Sonja Bruzauskas, soprano Melissa Givens, and countertenor Gerrod Pagenkopf in the title roles.

    Scheduled Program:

HANDEL Clori, Tirsi e File (Rome, 1708)
sung in Italian with English Surtitles
