The Houston Peace & Justice Center presents an event to Commemorate Hiroshima And The Call For Total Nuclear Disarmament at 7pm Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Rothko Chapel.

Honor the Commemoration of Hiroshima and the Call for Total Nuclear Disarmament 7 p.m. August 6, Rothko Chapel, 1409 Sul Ross at Yupon, 77006.  The event will include a brief presentation on scientific and political aspects of the nuclear bomb, readings and music. Refreshments will follow the 30 minute program along with an informal discussion about working together for Total Nuclear Disarmament. Petitions will be available to sign and sent to the President.

The United States dropped the first atomic bomb on the civilian population of Hiroshima, Japan 64 years ago on August 6, 1945, resulting in 140,000 immediate deaths and rising to 230,000 over the years. In 1996 the International Court of Justice concluded "that the threat or use of nuclear weapons would generally be contrary to the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict" and noted an obligation to pursue in good faith and bring to a conclusion negotiations leading to nuclear disarmament in all aspects under strict and effective international control. The United States has failed to honor its obligation under Article VI of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to conduct negotiations on nuclear disarmament in good faith. Now that the U.S. has a President who has stated our moral responsibility to rid the world of nuclear weapons, communities across the globe will observe August 6, 2009, as an opportunity to reflect upon the consequences of using nuclear weapons and to press for their total elimination.

We welcome you to join us as we remember those who died, and as we work toward "Total Nuclear Disarmament".

Sponsored by Houston Peace & Justice Center and Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Planning Committee Daniel Watanabe, Ph.D., Lynn Furay, Lee Loe, Fr. Gerry Kelly, MM, and Awanda Whitworth.
