Join Asia Society Texas Center in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia and Rice University for an exhilarating sensory experience of color, movement and sound when we present the first Javanese Shadow Puppet performance ever held in Houston.

Wayang kulit - Javanese shadow puppets - are the heart of Indonesian story-telling traditions. Made of flat leather that has been elaborately perforated and painted, wayang kulit cast intricate and dramatic shadows as they dance behind a screen, illustrating both classical myths and contemporary sagas to the accompaniment of a gamelan orchestra. Wayang kulit are a cultural touchstone for Indonesians, but performances outside the country are extremely rare.

World-renowned Master Puppeteer Ki Purbo Asmoro will perform Sesaji Raja Suya, The Grand Offering of the Kings, a story derived from the Indian epics, Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Prior to the performance, Dr. Ward Keeler, one of the nation's preeminent wayang scholars, will kick off the evening with a brief overview of the art form and introduction to the piece.

This special show is part of a two-city performance held only in Houston and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the essence of Indonesian culture.
