 Every third Wednesday of the month Houston Poetry Slam presents VerbosCity-Houston Poetry Slam Showcase  3 poem sets for open mic poets, classic local and touring featured poets, with local slam poets competing for a spot on the 2010 Houston Slam Team. With your host Brother Said and deejay Kool MD spinning the turns.

There are other poetry slams in the Houston area, but Houston Poetry Slam is the original Poetry Slam Incorporated certified poetry slam in the city, and we’ve maintained our certification continuously for over seven years. For each of those seven years we’ve sent a team to compete in one of our nations largest poetry festivals involving poets from all over the world: the National Poetry Slam. Twice in those seven years, our Houston team has made semi-finals.

You probably know poetry slam is competitive performance poetry, but we’re about more than competition. Houston Poetry Slam is committed to helping further the development and growth of our modern local poetry community beyond poetry cliques. We provide opportunities for any and all Houston poets to participate in poetry slam, and at the same time provide an incredibly unique form of entertainment for audiences wanting to enjoy something more than the usual “poetry reading”.

Poetry slam challenges new and veteran poets alike to hone their writing skills. Audiences get to expand their preconceived notions about poetry by experiencing just how enjoyable and inspiring a live performance of poetry can be.
