The Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) presents the exhibition Topiary Text Lead. Featuring the work of Peter Brown, Deborah LeBlanc, Liana Lopez, Delilah Monotya, Kia Neill and Linda Walsh.

EXHIBITION EXTENDED THROUGH NOVEMBER 16, 2009.

Topiary Text Lead is a collection of botany conscious and socially conscious works that are bound together by an aesthetic and psychological connection. Through the varying visual stories presented by Individual Artist Grantee recipients Peter Brown, Deborah LeBlanc, Liana Lopez, Delilah Montoya, Kia Neill and Linda Walsh there are didactic undertones that promote a reflection of our current state and foreshadow tomorrow. The images within the exhibition are both subtle and sharp; they range from abstraction to realism and possess both calming and intuitive characteristics.

Highlights from the exhibition include photographs by Peter Brown retrieved while kayaking through the bayous of the Gulf Coast recording the impact of Hurricane Ike on the Texas Coastal Plain. Liana Lopez travels to Nicaragua to study a re-envisionment of the country and was moved by the achievements of the women's collective and their triumphs over obstacles of cultural terrain, war and hurricanes. Linda Walsh shines light upon Houston's community gardens that are currently alleviating hunger, being used as educational components and enhancing the health and aesthetic of Houston. Kia Neill brings drawings to life with her sculptural textile take on graphite drawings. Her visually topographic work explores the relationship between physical and cerebral space. Deborah LeBlanc uses visual layers as metaphors for language. Both Neill's and LeBlanc's works play on the idea of repetitive motion and visual continuity. Delilah Montoya's intaglio photo-polymer prints are a handful of narratives both from her personal life and from the lives of others. Her work Modern Democracy is a modern take on Goya's Disaster of War.

Peter Brown, Deborah LeBlanc, Liana Lopez, Delilah Montoya, Kia Neill and Linda Walsh are all Individual Artist Grantees. The Individual Artists Grant program represents just one of the many ways in which HAA supports Houston's artistic community. The City of Houston annually supports this and more than 200 additional arts grants.
