The Grand 1894 Opera House presents Sweet Honey in the Rock. Grammy Award-winning a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock brings their stunning vocal prowess to Galveston’s Grand 1894 Opera House on Saturday, October 10, at 8 pm. Sponsored in part Texas Commission on the Arts, this African American ensemble seamlessly blends lyrics, spirited movement and stirring stories by capturing the complex sounds of Blues, spirituals, and jazz improvisation.

From Psalm 81:16 comes the promise to a people of being fed by honey out of the rock. Honey – an ancient substance, sweet and nurturing. Rock – an elemental strength, enduring the winds of time. The metaphor of sweet honey in the rock captures completely these women whose repertoire is steeped in the sacred music of the Black church, the clarion calls of the civil rights movement, and songs of the struggle for justice everywhere.

Founded in 1973 at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey In The Rock, has been a vital and innovative presence in the music culture in communities of conscience around the world. Their sound is almost intoxicating, as they deploy their voices in myriad combinations and styles – call-and-response, scatting, percolating percussive effects, waterfalls of harmonies and counterpoints, rounds, spoken rap-like segments, and just about every other pleasing way the human voice can be utilized.

"We are warriors. Our songs sounds and lyrics give us stance - make clear the ground we hold. We name through our singing the territory of the expanding community we sound," says the group's founder, Bernice Johnson Reagon. "When you see our songs, you see the tip of the mountain upon which we stand and it is solid ground."

You won't want to miss this exciting collaboration of soul-stirring entertainment at The Grand!
