In collaboration with Aurora Picture Show, Musiqa presents the second of its 2009-10 subscription concerts. The concert, titled Focus, takes place on Saturday, January 9, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. Aurora Picture Show and Musiqa once again join forces to present an eye-opening mix of film, lighting, and music. As part of Musiqa’s Downtown Series, music and film will mingle and take center stage in a special collaboration for one night only. With music by Kilstofte, Maroney, Knussen, Turnage and Brandt; along with lighting design by Christina Giannelli and Tomasz Golka conducting, music will share the center stage with film.

The program features Mark Kilstofte's Ballistic Etude 3.1, Oliver Knussen's . . .upon one note. . ., Marcus Maroney's Mouvements Cachés, Mark-Anthony Turnage's Two Baudelaire Songs and the world premiere of Anthony Brandt's Focus, a collaboration with lighting designer Christina Giannelli.

Performers include Karol Bennett, soprano; Lisa Burrell, violin; Leone Buyse, flute; James Dunham, viola; Mollie Marcuson, harp; Barrett Sills, cello; Jade Simmons, piano; Sean Wang, violin; Michael Webster, clarinet; and Blake Wilkins, percussion.

Tomasz Golka, (pictured) conductor of the Lubbock Symphony, conducts.

Curated by Aurora Picture Show, the short screening amidst musical performances will feature Are You The Favorite Person of Anyone?, directed by Miguel Arteta and written by artist and filmmaker Miranda July. Arteta’s short film features three dialogues written by Miranda July and stars John C. Reilly, Mike White, Miranda July and Chuy Chavez.

People In Order, directed by media artist Lenka Clayton and James Price, will also be featured as part of the screening. Starting from age one, the film places 100 different people arranged in order according to their age.

Recently featured on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" and winner of 2008 and 2009 Access to Artistic Excellence Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Musiqa is nationally recognized for its innovative inter-disciplinary concerts. Musiqa performs an annual subscription series at Zilkha Hall as part of the Hobby Center's "Uniquely Houston" series, free loft concerts at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and an outreach program that has been seen by over 20,000 public elementary school students in the past six years.
