Houston artist Leandra di Buelna will bring what he describes as “art for those a world apart” to Canal Street Gallery this October. The opening reception for his solo show, Leandra’s World of Fantasy, takes place from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, October 2 and will continue throughout the month. The Friday evening reception is free of charge and open to the public.

Di Buelna’s provocative artwork, which some have described as “Dali on acid,” may take root in his interesting past. His biography includes military service in both Vietnam and Korea, work in the copper mines and teaching art in San Francisco. His paintings have been shown in museums and galleries throughout California and most recently Houston.

The self-taught artist sticks to the Surrealistic mold. His paintings often depict alien life in another world, complete with colorful creatures and the artist’s own stream of consciousness. He also creates sculptures made from recycled objects including avocado pits and coconut shells to cigarette lighters and old CDs.

Di Buelna says his imagery comes as a gift from God. “I see pictures all the time. When I go to sleep I see them, and when I wake up I see them. I just paint what I see.”

His paintings also depict the possibility of life on other planets. “There are more planets out there than there are pebbles in the sand,” he says. “I know what’s out there. It’s in my subconscious and I paint it.”
