The Jung Center of Houston presents Frida Kahlo, Sigmund Freud, and 'Moses': Art, Religion, and Psychotherapy in Dialogue.  Join us for this special panel discussion, led by Sharon Lorenzo, on one of the most remarkable paintings held in Houston collections.

Encounter Frida Kahlo's complex masterwork "Moses," and the surprising story of its genesis. In 1939 Sigmund Freud wrote his final text, Moses and Monotheism, which is a compilation of his personal reflections on Biblical stories and the role of religion in the human psyche. In 1946, Frida Kahlo was commissioned to paint a picture about this book by a neighbor in Mexico City. "Moses" was a complex and outstanding prototype for a planned mural; Kahlo's death ended the project, which would have been the first public mural in Mexico City by a woman.

The work is owned by Houstonian Marilyn Oshman, a collector and patron of the arts. The painting has recently been in an exhibition of Kahlo's paintings and was deemed one of the most valuable works of Latin American art in the United States. Kaholo's work can no longer be sold outside of Mexico.

In this special evening, a four- member panel will discuss the ownership of the work, its artistic contribution, and its reflection on the Christian and Jewish interpretations of the birth of Moses and his life and work in the early church.

    Presenters:

Marilyn Oshman, noted art patron and owner of the painting
Sharon Lorenzo, art historian and specialist in Latin American modernism
    J. Pittman McGehee, director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychology and Spirituality; adjunct faculty, University of Houston
Rabbi Roy A. Walters, Congregation Emanu El, Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston
