The Recycle Club
November 6-November 7, 2009

On November 7 2009, Travesty Dance Group/Houston presents The Recycle Club, a hip hybrid happening by Karen Stokes that includes a performance with video projections, special guest performers Farrell Dyde & Roberta Stokes, a visual art installation featuring three artists who use recycled clothing in their work, information about recycling in general, and a rocking after-party with a DJ, food & beverages and a swing dance lesson.
In the performance component of The Recycle Club, choreographer/director Karen Stokes takes a look backwards at works she has created in Houston over the last 11 years. The performance reinvestigates, recreates, reinvents, and remixes movement from over eight dance theater works in a medley of song, dance, & video.
Amidst this medley, TDG/H is excited to recycle two significant performers from Houston's dance past in a special duet: Farrell Dyde and Roberta Stokes. Farrell Dyde has created over 100 works of choreography and was an original member of the Contemporary Arts Museum choreographers in Houston. Roberta Stokes had a dance company and studio in Houston for over 10 years in the 70's and 80's, and was Founder & Director of CAM Choreographers and Houston Modern Dance Council. The hour-long performance includes lighting design by the University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance Director, Steve Wallace.
As a happening, this event includes components that are 'outside the box' of a traditional dance theater performance. The Recycle Club features an installation by visual artists Teresa O'Conner, Daniel Adame, and Roberta Stokes. All three artists will have work on display that use recycled clothing as an integral part of their vision. The event will also include information displays about recycling as a local, regional, and national effort.
The Recycle Club includes a post performance party where audience and performers mingle. The party will include swing dance lessons (as a popular recycled social dance form), a DJ for participatory dance club fun and food/drinks. The cast includes company members Kara Ary, Teresa Chapman, Mechelle Flemming, Erica Lewis, Catalina Molnari, and Karen Stokes, with guest appearances by Yahudi Castaneda, Richard Lyders-Gustafson, Farrell Dyde, and Roberta Stokes.
The Recycle Club is one night only: Saturday November 7th at 8pm. Location: Barnevelder Theater, 2201 Preston St. near Minute Maid Park. TDG/Houston will present a preview of the performance only on November 6 at 8pm for individuals who are unable to join us November 7.
