Joan Son and Betsy Siegel's work, The Robe Project, debuts at the Quilt Festival!  Joan Son and Betsy Siegel are the recipients of an Individual Artist Grant Award. This grant is funded by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

Betsy and Joan will be creating an 8 ft. hanging ROBE that will incorporate photos from the diverse cultures in Houston. It will be reminiscent of a traditional Japanese kimono and be sewn together as a quilt from over 800 squares of photography and paper.

The Robe’s purpose is to represent and honor the wide variety of heritage and ethnicity in Houston. Inspired by President Obama’s inaugural statement “our patchwork heritage is a strength not a weakness” this art project will visualize his statement about “our common humanity and our role in ushering in a new era of peace.”

It will be exhibited at a number of public venues in Houston beginning in October 2009 at the International Quilt Festival/Houston and continuing through 2010.
