Galveston Arts Center is pleased to present two art making workshops this fall at Moody Mansion for both children and adults. On Saturday, November 14, Cherie Ray will lead “The Magic of Mandalas” and on Saturday, December 19, Carolyn Vieau will instruct participants in the art of making copper enamel jewelry.

Classes will be held in the kitchen at Moody Mansion, 2618 Broadway and are limited to 15 students per session. Morning classes will be held from 9 to 11 am for children ages 6 to 14, and afternoon classes for adults will be held from 1 to 3 pm. Classes are $15 each ($12 for GAC members), plus materials fee. Call Robin at 409.763.2403 to register or for further information. Participants of either class should dress appropriately for mess.

“The Magic of Mandalas” will be led by Cherie Ray on November 14. Mandala, a Sanskrit word for circle, has been used as a tool for transformation since the beginning of time by many cultures in the world. Its purposes vary from healing and connecting one to a Higher Power, our intuition, our creative self, the space of forgiveness and love, to learning to relax into the unknown. In addition, the process is relaxing, meditative, fun, stimulates creativity and promotes inner peace. Cherie Ray is a Creativity Advocate who conducts creativity and process painting workshops at her True You Creativity Studio in Houston. The materials fee for this workshop is $6.00 per student.

Galveston jewelry artist Carolyn Vieau will lead the December 19th workshop on creating copper enamel jewelry. Enameling is the colorful result of melting powdered glass onto a metal surface by firing. Heat causes the glass enamel to melt and unite with the surface of the copper. Variations of this ancient art form have been used by many civilizations around the globe for more than two thousand years. Enameling is an easy process to learn and participants will each have the opportunity to create several pieces to keep or for holiday gift giving. The materials fee for this class is $15 per student.

Galveston Arts Center is currently operating “in exile” from our second temporary downtown gallery space—the site of the former Maceo’s Spice and Import Company located on the corner of Market and 25th Streets. The administrative offices are also at this location. The gallery and selections from GAC’s museum shop, ArtWorks, are open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm.

SUPPORT AND SPONSORSHIP:  Funding for GAC’s exhibition programs is provided by The Brown Foundation; Houston Endowment, Inc., Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund, The National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, the City of Galveston through the Hotel/Motel Tax Fund, and the generous support of the community, volunteers and an active membership. GAC’s Art for All Education Program is supported in part by the Permanent Endowment Fund of Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church, The Smothers Foundation, Brown Foundation, Inc., Fondren Foundation, Alice Taylor Gray Foundation, Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund, Target Stores, and Texas Commission on the Arts.

LOCATION AND HOURS: Galveston Arts Center is located on the corner of Strand and 22nd (Kempner) Street in historic downtown Galveston. The building is currently closed until further notice for repairs to damage from Hurricane Ike. We anticipate re-opening in 2010. For more information, call 409.763.2403 or visit www.galvestonartscenter.org.

Galveston Arts Center in Exile 2 is located at 2501 Market Street, Galveston, TX, 77550. The mailing address for GAC remains the same: 2127 Strand, Galveston, TX 77550.
