CONTEXT, a Houston-based chamber-music ensemble, presents CONTEXT: Guitar, Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 4pm in Rice University's Duncan Recital Hall.
CONTEXT presents our first-ever program featuring the classical guitar, in music that spans over 500 years. Narváez was a 16th-century composer and guitarist who served Phillip II of Spain. Giuliani was a famed early 19th-century guitar virtuoso. French composer Murail is known as a ‘Spectralist’, with music that explores unusual sources and effects of sound. And Crumb is one of our time’s most influential and innovative composers—his Mundus Canis (A Dog’s World) is a comic portrait of his family’s dogs, with percussion that includes gourds, marimba, maracas, and a gong in a bucket of water! Renowned Argentine guitarist Pablo Márquez joins CONTEXT for this unforgettable concert.
Featuring: Musicians: Sergiu Luca, violin; Pablo Marquez, guitar; Matthew McClung, percussion. Performed on modern instruments.
Scheduled Program:
Luys de Narváez, Selections from ‘Seys libros del Delphin’ for Guitar
Franz Schubert/Johann Metz, Six Songs, transcribed for Guitar
Tristan Murail, Tellur, for Guitar
George Crumb, Mundus Canis, for Guitar and Percussion
Mauro Giuliani, Grand Duo Concertante, for Violin and Guitar
