CONTEXT, a Houston-based chamber-music ensemble, presents CONTEXT Season Finale: Sextets,  Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 4pm in Rice University's Duncan Recital Hall.

Artistic Director Sergiu Luca leads CONTEXT’s Season Finale— a celebration of 80 years of the String Sextet. This unusual ensemble of two violins, two violas, and two cellos is considered exceptionally challenging, and is favored by composers for its expressive richness and variety of color. Along with Dvorak’s great folk-inspired Sextet from 1878, you’ll hear three rarities. From 1860, Borodin’s early Sextet in D minor was written when the 26-year-old Russian was traveling in Europe studying chemistry, physics, and medicine. Martinu, one of the 20th century’s greatest Czech composers, composed his Sextet in 1932. And Richard Strauss arranged his Sextet from his last opera, Capriccio, written in Munich in 1940.

Featuring:  Musicians: Joan DerHovsepian, viola; Jean-Michel Fonteneau, cello; Ying Fu, violin; Michael Kannen, cello; Sergiu Luca, violin; Max Mandel, viola.

    Scheduled Program:
    Alexander Borodin, String Sextet
    Bohuslav Martinu, String Sextet
    Richard Strauss, String Sextet
    Antonin Dvorak, String Sextet
