On the second Sunday of every month, Greater Houston Preservation Alliance (GHPA) presents a docent-guided walking tour of an architecturally and/or historically significant area of Houston.  Sunday, November 15 join the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance on their Downtown Deco Walking Tour. Reservations required.

In the 1920s and 1930s, as Houston was beginning its transition from medium sized Southern city to major American metropolis, many local businessmen and civic leaders embraced a new, “modernistic” style of architecture to embody the spirit of the growing city. Discover downtown's impressive Art Deco architecture during Greater Houston Preservation Alliance's 90-minute Downtown Deco guided walking tour at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 15.

The tour will end with a special visit inside the 1929 Gulf Building (now the JPMorganChase Building), a modernistic masterpiece that contains some of the city's most impressive Art Deco interiors. Due to the special nature of this tour, reservations are required. To reserve space on the walking tour, please e-mail your name, telephone number and the number of spaces to tours@ghpa.org  by 5 p.m., Friday, November 13.

Tickets are $10 per person ($7 for GHPA members and students with valid ID). Children 11 years old and under are admitted free. Tickets go on sale at 1:30 p.m. on the day of the tour in front of Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas [map]. Tickets may be charged to VISA, MasterCard or American Express.

Tour participants will receive a handout that includes historic photographs of some of Houston's lost Art Deco architecture. To learn more about Houston's modernistic architecture, visit www.houstondeco.org.

On-street parking is free in downtown Houston on Sundays. Paid parking is available in nearby lots and garages. There are no public restrooms along the tour route.

Greater Houston Preservation Alliance is supported in part by a grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
