The term “rag,” David Courtney explains, comes from the Sanskrit “ranj,” which means “to color.” “The implication is that the mind of the listener will be like a blank canvas on which the artist will paint,” he says. During the concert David Courtney will periodically stop and discuss the instruments and the reasons why a raga is linked to the afternoon. It is hoped that newcomers to the music will find the concert an inviting introduction to a fascinating art form.
