The Foundation for Modern Music presents Musique Artistique.  Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 7:30 PM in Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston.

The White Oak Trio will be premiering David Bernstein’s Winter Sunlight and Shadow, written for them in 2009, and his arrangement of Estrellita, also written for them and premiered in 2008. In addition they will be performing the Café Music of Paul Schoenfield.

Known for its high standards of ensemble playing, the White Oak Trio is a Houston based professional music ensemble formed by three musicians: Steven McMillan, violin, Meryl Ettelson, (pictured) piano, and Barrett Sills, cello. The unique and colorful combination of these three instruments (violin, piano, and cello) has long inspired composers to produce some of their greatest works. The White Oak Trio follows an original artistic journey through this great repertoire based on the musical instincts of its players.

Additional performers include Raúl Orlando Edwards, baritone, and Paul Boyd, piano.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m., and guests are invited to join Bernstein for a pre-concert reception at 6:30 p.m. The event costs $20 for general admission and $10 for Blaffer Gallery members, students and seniors over 65. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at www.modernmusic.org/tickets.htm . Blaffer Gallery will extend its regular hours, remaining open through the duration of the concert.

The Foundation for Modern Music is dedicated to supporting new music in the classical tradition and the musicians who create it, by offering concert performances, community and educational outreach, recording projects, and competitions for young composers. We encourage and celebrate the vigorous and diverse work of today’s composers and performers, in Houston and beyond.
