Canal Street Gallery presents the exhibition Bobbye Bennett: Line Flow, Unfettered. Reception: Friday, December 4th; Exhibit on view: December 2, 2009 - December 30, 2009.
For Bobbye Bennett, art is intuitive. She simply likes to paint, enjoys the ritual of creation, and treats her paintings as meditation. She says painting helps her clear her mind. Her solo exhibit opening December at Canal Street Gallery is titled, “Line Flow, Unfettered.” She explains, “Line has always been always been my subject in a way. And watercolor is the flow.”
Her drawings and watercolors will be on view at Canal Street Gallery through the month of December. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 and is open to the public without charge.
A native Texan, Bennett was raised in Jewett. She attended Lon Morris College and Sam Houston University and studied at Glassell School of Art in Houston. She has exhibited her work all around Houston and Galveston and as far away as Singapore. She currently lives and works in her studio/home in the West End neighborhood of Houston. Bennett says she has always been intrigued with the unseen and the unknown, inner worlds and visions. She also is fascinated with nature and different cultures. She has been influenced by rituals, offerings, celebrations and relics.
“My work seeks a balance with opposition and tension,” she said. “I’m interested in the essence of a place and time, a memory that suggests nature and harmony.” Bennett works in several media-- from graphite renderings to watercolor paintings, and from pastel drawings to sculpture made of ordinary materials, felt paper, and plywood armatures. For her exhibition at Canal Street, she is bringing paintings and drawings that are influenced by nature. Many will depict water and sea life. “I’ve always been attracted to water. I like to be around water,” Bennett explains. “Water covers most of the earth, and we need it to survive. Water is a wonderful thing.”
