The world class Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez will perform on the stage of Galveston’s Grand 1894 Opera House on Sunday, January 17 at 3pm. During the past fifty years, the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez has traveled to over sixty countries; has received more than two hundred awards and international recognitions; and has been praised by the critics of five continents and audiences of millions.

Artistic creativity and the hard work of Amalia Hernandez materialized in the creation of the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico and her dance school for professional dancers. Created more than four decades ago, the Ballet has represented Mexico in the most important forums. With a vast repertoire, the Ballet has managed to bring the aesthetic manifestations rooted in Mexican folklore to people worldwide. The organization has a great team participating in various fields of expertise: dancers, composers, singers, scenery and costume designers, musicians, technicians, and so on. The ensemble has achieved numerous awards and abroad.

The musical journey includes flamenco, tango, classical ballet, polka, African Rhythms,  and pre-Hispanic religious rites, just to name a few influences. Audiences love the  intricate, vibrant costumes and larger-than-life props presented with flash and glitter to  amaze and astound. From brilliant and hauntingly meditative dances derived from long  vanished Indian traditions to popular songs of lovers and revolutionaries, the dances are  all about Mexico. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the company’s celebration of  life in movement, music and color. Its many dances encompass not only the spectacle of  the presentation but also the history encompassed by the rituals, dramatic events and  depictions from Mexico’s rich and varied past.
