The Clay Arts Museum and Education Organization (CAMEO) hosts its biggest yearly event on Saturday, January 9, with a 6-9 p.m. champagne reception and awards presentation for the 2010 4th Annual Texas Teapot Tournament and Exhibition. The evening will honor the artists who crafted the finest teapots for the fourth annual tournament presented by CAMEO.  2010 Juror: Cindi Strauss, Curator, Modern and Contemporary Decorative Arts and Design, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Contemporary teapots have the capacity to be practical, healing or playful. They are equally at home on kitchen tables, bookshelves and altars. Teapots can be a canvas for subtle, graceful slips and glazes – or a means of challenging our expectations as to form. Each year at this time, the Clay Arts Museum and Educational Organization (CAMEO) invites potters to contribute their own unique interpretation of this time-honored form to the Annual International Texas Teapot Tournament.

This year will be the second year that the tournament will be held in CAMEO’s permanent location in the Montrose area of Houston, and the first year to have Cindi Strauss as our juror. Cindi serves as the Curator for Modern and Contemporary Decorative Arts and Design at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH). In addition to exhibits of work in metal and glass, Cindi also organized “The Scholar´s Eye: Contemporary Ceramics from the Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio Collection.”

Once again we will be honoring one participant with a $1,000 Purchase Award. Although exhibited in Texas, the tournament is truly international – with entries from anywhere in the US or abroad. Additional contact information is houstonpotters.com.

The winning teapots created by local artists and artists from across the country will remain on display through January 31. There is no admission charge to view the teapots at the Houston Potters Guild Shop—space that CAMEO shares. As part of the Texas Teapot Tournament, CAMEO awards a $1,000 Grand Prize, a $500 Memorial Award, and a $500 People's Choice Award. The Grand Prize is a purchase award; the winning teapot enters the CAMEO's permanent collection.

"The teapot is the pinnacle of the potter's art," says Janis Ross, CAMEO founder and president of the board of directors. The grand prize winner in 2008 was Todd Van Duren.

    About CAMEO

CAMEO was established in 2006 as a nonprofit organization to support and encourage emerging clay artists; as a teaching center for Houstonians to get their hands in clay; and as a collecting museum that also hosts clay art exhibitions. CAMEO recently moved into its new home at 1701 Dunlavy, a space it shares with the Houston Potters Guild. For details, visit the website, www.cameohouston.org .
