    The Houston Symphony presents Marin Alsop's Mahler's First.  Thursday, January 7, 2010, Saturday-Sunday, January 9 & 10. 

    In September 2007, Marin Alsop made history with her appointment as the 12th music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the first woman to head a major American orchestra. She steps onto the Houston Symphony stage to lend her extraordinary talent to Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, the “Titan.”

    Feel the gentle freshness Mahler’s music, full of nature sounds and bird calls in the distance, then journey through its lush melodies and dances till you arrive to an unsettling, melancholic version of “Frère Jacques” in the minor key. Finally, experience the drama of a battle that ultimately leads to an outcry of victory.
