The World Affairs Council of Houston presents General David H. Petraeus, Commander, U.S. Central Command.
General David H. Petraeus assumed command of the United States Central Command in October 2008, after serving as the Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq. He has held leadership positions in infantry units in Europe and the United States, and many staff assignments including Military Assistant and Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
General Petraeus was the General George C. Marshall Award winner as the top graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He earned a Ph.D. degree in international relations from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and he later served as an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the US Military Academy.
He has been honored with several awards including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal for valor, and the NATO Meritorious Service Medal. He has been recognized for his leadership and influence by TIME and Foreign Policy Magazine among others.
