The Menil Collection presents the 2010 Vivian L. Smith Lecture: Glenn Peers - From the Collection: "Gold and Face: Living Members of the Menil’s Byzantium," Monday, February 15, 2010, 8:00 p.m.

This illustrated lecture by the University of Texas Byzantine scholar argues for new ways of responding to and interpreting Byzantine objects. First we must see the objects as active and alive; then we must understand them as relevant to, and reflective of, ourselves; and finally we must open ourselves to their invitation to personal transformation.

Associate Professor Peers (pictured) earned his Ph.D. in the History of Art from The Johns Hopkins University, and, while on leave in 2000-2001, he earned a Licentiate in Medieval Studies from the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies in the University of Toronto. He has published on the theoretical aspects of Byzantine art, as well as on theological and hagiographical problems. His work, Subtle Bodies: Representing Angels in Byzantium, (2001) was published by The University of California Press; this book was a runner-up for the Robert W. Hamilton Co-op Book Award in 2002.

Peers’ examination of frames and framing in Byzantine art, Sacred Shock: Framing Visual Experience in Byzantium, was published by Penn State University Press in 2004. Current projects include Christian-Muslim interaction in medieval Egypt, philhellenism in Renaissance France, and Byzantium and modernism. He is serving on the Boards of the Canadian Archeological Institute at Athens, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and the Byzantine Studies Conference. During the 2007-08 academic year, he is a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton.
