Rice University Shepherd School of Music presents the Shepherd Society Family Concert. Saturday, January 30, at 11:00 AM, in Stude Concert Hall - Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
Join us for the mischievous pranks of the Tom Sawyer of classical music – Till Eulenspiegel! His impetuous story is told through the energetic music of Richard Strauss. Conducted by Larry Rachleff and narrated by Rachel Buchman, the performance will feature the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra.
Till Eulenspiegel was an impudent trickster figure who originated in the Middle Low German folklore and was disseminated in popular printed editions narrating the string of lightly-connected episodes that outlined his picaresque career, primarily in Germany, the Low Countries and France. The Shepherd Society’s Family Concert on Saturday, January 30, features one of the most exciting and best-loved works for symphony orchestra, Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks. The composer of this beloved work brings the antics and escapades of a legendary rogue from German folklore to colorful life in this tone poem for large orchestra.
Music director Larry Rachleff will conduct the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra -- and young children’s music specialist Rachel Buchman will be the host for this morning of musical merry-making and mischief.
There will be one performance only at 11:00 a.m. in Stude Concert Hall, and this free event is recommended for children ages 6 and older. Arrive early for the best seating!
