Buchanan Gallery presents the exhibition Places of Rest: Retired Vessels, Marfa and Big Bend, an exhibition of work by Reinhard Ziegler.  Opening with the January 23 Galveston ArtWalk, and continuing on view through February 27.

Dreamlike feelings of depth and motion emanate from Reinhard Ziegler's incredible hand-tinted silver gelatin photographs, depicting what he calls his two "visual loves," naval vessels and the landscape of the American West. All of Ziegler's work begins with a black and white negative, shot from a moving vehicle at slow shutter speed to create a sense of motion and to impart a dreamlike quality. The print is then transformed as Ziegler rubs pastels into the surface, making each into a unique creation that is both photograph and painting. The works are then sealed in varnish and framed without glass, allowing the light and surface to create an intimate, ever-changing experience for viewers.

For Ziegler, the scale of the subject matter, combined with the scale of the works themselves, are meant to portray a sense of awe. We think you'll agree once you see this incredible exhibition in person!
