The Menil Community Arts Festival is a one-day open house event bringing together all of the arts organizations that exist in and around the Menil Collection campus. Through this unique collaborative effort Houstonians will have the opportunity to enjoy a day of free entertainment and access to some of the premier arts groups in the heart of Houston's museum district.
The Menil Community Arts Festival is a one-day festival hosted by thirteen arts organizations scheduled for Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 11AM-4PM in and around The Menil Collection campus. Through this unique collaborative effort Houstonians will have the opportunity to enjoy a day of free performances, films, workshops, open galleries and family art activities with some of the premier arts groups in the heart of Houston’s museum district.
Films and performances, including a musical performance by Da Camera, a literary reading from InPrint, a musical performance from The Rothko Chapel, and a film screening by Aurora Picture Show and SWAMP will be held in and around the Menil Collection’s four buildings for art: the 1987 museum designed by architect Renzo Piano to house and display the art collection assembled by Dominique and John de Menil, the Cy Twombly Gallery, the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, and Richmond Hall (the permanent installation of work by Dan Flavin).
In addition to the performances, several organizations will host Open House receptions and art sales to showcase their services and offerings. Some of the arts organizations welcoming the Houston community into their offices include Aurora Picture Show, Bayou City Arts Festival, COLLAGE: Art for Cancer and the Water Color Arts Society Houston.
During the Festival, visitors to the Menil neighborhood are invited to bring their own picnics, sample treats from festival sponsors or bring a buck to explore some of the finest food trucks in Houston.
